Mature open, small rosette to 18cm. diameter. Wide, stiff, arching, frosted maroon leaves with dense, relatively large, triangular, hooked white spines. The foliage reverse is heavily coated with white trichomes. "Dainagon" was the major counselor of the Imperial Court in Japan, a role dating from the 7th. century to the 19th. century A.D. Reg.
